Relebogile sinkhole update: Education Department now searching for other venues

The Gauteng Department of Education says it is trying to make plans to assist learners of Relebogile Secondary School after a sinkhole caved in at the school this morning.

The Department’s spokesperson, Mr Steve Mabona, responded to questions from the Herald a short while ago.

“The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) is aware and concerned about the matter. Consequently, our Infrastructures Unit was dispatched to the school for intervention accordingly.

We are currently in the process of identifying areas around where learners can be placed at various churches and community centres so thus effective teaching and learning may continue.

It must be noted that Merafong and Westonaria are dolomitic areas, each time there are earth tremors sinkholes develop.

A Geo-Tech study has to be conducted to determine the severity of sinkholes and what future challenges are going to be. What preventative measures are in place to deal with such challenges to avoid a natural disaster. All infrastructural challenges detected will also be attended, accordingly.

We will continue to monitor the situation at the school,” says Mabona.

The Herald will continue to keep the public updated about this important matter.
