Sewage crisis: Ongoing leakages pollute Wonderfonteinspruit

The Wonderfonteinspruit later joins the Mooi River that supplies Potchefstroom with its drinking water.

The municipality continues to let its sewage stream into the Wonderfonteinspruit.

The Herald previously reported about sewage running from the pipeline over the bridge between Khutsong and the Khutsong sewerage works. By Monday, so much sewage had leaked from the pipeline on top of the bridge that it streamed down the side.

From here the sewage streamed through the veld toward the river.

“It has been looking like this for a long time. The municipality thinks that because not many people come here, they don’t have to worry about it,” one of several pedestrians crossing the area lamented.

Passing pedestrians complained that the part of the Wonderfonteinspruit flowing through this area currently consisted mostly of sewage.

Meanwhile, less than 10km further down the river, sewage is still leaking from an overflowing manhole next to 26th Avenue in Welverdiend. This sewage also streams straight into the river.

Although the part of the Wonderfonteinspruit leading through our area is not used for drinking water, it later joins the Mooi River, which supplies the drinking water of our neighbouring town Potchefstroom.

Although the Herald contacted the municipality about the problem on Monday, their marketing and communications manager, Temba Fezani, did not respond.
