Wedela SAPS holds unique event

It was the first such gathering.

The police in Wedela held an unusual event to conclude Women’s Month in style last week.

According to the Wedela SAPS’s social crime prevention officer, Sergeant Zikhona Sifuba, members of the area’s taxi associations joined the police’s youth desk, gender-based violence unit and other officials as well some local politicians on August 28.

“The men were dressed in women’s clothes and came like this to the police station. Isaac
Vhoromu, who is from the taxi association, addressed the issue of gender-based
violence and taxi violence,” says Sifuba.

“He asked the police to work hand-in-hand with the taxi operators. He said the taxi operators are the ones who see most of these things because they interact with passengers
every day,” she added.

As taxi violence is increasing in our area, the police in Wedela and the local taxi associations
decided to form a closer bond. The taxi associations said that they wanted to join police campaigns, while Vhoromu asked that all police members keep information given to them confidential.

“They are afraid to report issues because the police will tell the suspect who has reported them,” says Sifuba.

She confirmed to the taxi associations that they will be involved in future campaigns.
Various other senior police members also thanked the 130 residents who attended
for taking an interest in Women’s Month activities, as it shows that they care about
the women in our society.
