The Merafong City Local Municipality still owes Eskom and Rand Water almost R2 billion.
This came to light during the council meeting of July 30.
The municipality owed Rand Water a total of R1 023 020 113 by June 30 this year.It also owed the bulk electricity provider Eskom a whopping R917 937 764. A total of R2 064 613 of the municipality’s current account was more than 30 days outstanding.
Both Eskom and Rand Water has threatened to cut services to consumers due to the municipality’s outstanding account previously.
Although various residents in parts of Carletonville, Fochville and Welverdiend complained about water pressure problems recently, the municipality blames maintenance by Rand Water for the issues.
Rand Water declined to comment.
