Khutsong sewage problems getting worse

About ten sinkholes have occurred in this area during the past 15 years.

The sewage problems in Khutsong Extension 3 are getting worse again in the same area where sewage leaks caused sinkholes in the past.

The Merafong City Local Municipality dug a large hole in the ground to open a collapsed sewer manhole next to the road to Hlanganani Primary School in April this year.

The municipality has, however, made no attempt to fix the manhole but is letting the hole, which is about five metres deep, run full of sewage.

What makes matters worse is that this hole is right next to the road that many of the learners use to get to the primary school.

Sewage has also started leaking from manholes in the veld on the opposite side of the same road.

Approximately ten sinkholes have occurred in this area due to sewage leaks in the past 15 years.

One of them, which is just across the road from Hlanganani, is still open after caving in more than two years ago. This week it was, yet again, not properly cordoned off and school children were playing around it.

Although The Herald asked the municipality’s Manager of Marketing and Communications, Mr Temba Fezani, about the issues, no feedback was received by printing time.

The hole on April 22 this year, shortly after the municipality dug open the manhole structure.
