Big fire damage in Fochville

Fire trucks from Fochville and Carletonville attended to the scene.

Two businesses were damaged during a fire in Fochville over the past weekend.

According to local resident and businesswoman, Aileen Nieuwenhuizen, a member of the Fochville Community Policing Forum (CPF), Corna van Rensburg called her at approximately 20:40 on July 27.

“She said that there was a fire at the building next to ours. We raced there and immediately started pulling our fire hoses off their reels to help fight the fire from our side,” she told the Herald. The fire already raged at the business, an electrical repairs shop, in Pretorius Street. Despite firefighters and members of the public trying to put out the fire, this business as well as that of Perfect Stitch was damaged. The latter is still doing business despite the damage.

Willy’s, the business belonging to the Nieuwenhuizens, as well as the premises used by their tenants have an extensive sprinkler system and several fire hoses on reels. Nieuwenhuizen believes that these precautions saved their business. She advises other business owners to also install such firefighting equipment in case a fire might occur.

According to the West Rand District Municipality’s Emergency Management Services Manager, Nico Kahts fire trucks from Fochville and Carletonville attended the scene to fight the blaze. By printing time, the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
