Merafong continues to pollute

The municipality is continually polluting the river.

The Merafong City Local Municipality is still not paying attention to how its lack of dealing with sewage problems in Welverdiend is polluting the environment.

Residents staying in the area of 26th Avenue in Welverdiend have been complaining about an overflow since November last year.

They say it has been a problem for the past nine years. This street is at the bottom of the town and the last street with houses before the wetland next to the Wonderfonteinspruit.

The sewage leaking from the manhole streams straight toward this river. Although the problem was temporarily attended to, it has leaked non-stop since March this year.

During warmer months the manhole could not be seen from the road because it was obscured by tall grass and weeds. These plants have now dried up and the municipality does not have an excuse for not being able to spot the problem.

The Herald again reported the issue to them on Monday.

“The cable was stolen at the pump station leading to no pumping. Therefore, the cable will be replaced as soon as possible,” their Marketing and Communications Manager, Temba Fezani, answered.
