House robber arrested after chase

These house robbers did not make it very far.

Quick action by Carletonville police members led to the arrest of a house robber over the weekend.

A resident (22) of Barnard Street in Carletonville was at home with his brother early Sunday morning, 12 May.

His brother heard a knock on the resident’s bedroom window. “Open the door, or we will shoot you,” a voice outside threatened.

Suddenly, the attacker broke the window, pulled the curtains aside and pointed his firearm at the victim, again ordering him to unlock the door. As the resident did so, his brother ran to another room, jumped out of a window and ran to their neighbour for help. He saw three robbers in their yard while fleeing for his life.

The neighbour called the police, who raced to the scene. Upon arrival, Community Service Centre (CSC) members saw a white Audi A3 pulling out of the yard. They notified their colleagues to look for the robbers and raced after the vehicle. The police arrested one of the robbers, who had jumped from the vehicle, and confiscated the two 9 mm pistols, two magazines of ammunition and coins he had with him. The hijackers had filed off the serial numbers of both pistols.

Other police members chased after the Audi until the driver lost control when he crashed into the railway lines on Botha Street. Unfortunately, he managed to jump out and flee.

When the police returned to the victim’s house, they found the robbers had assaulted him badly.

As far as could be determined, the Audi, written off in the crash, was not stolen but belonged to a relative of one robber.
