Kokosi’s rubbish problems worse than ever

The heap of unremoved rubbish now fills the whole street.

Although the entrance to Kokosi Extension 99 has had a refuse problem for years, it is now worse than ever.

Residents of Extension 99, Kokosi’s informal settlement area, have dumped their rubbish on the corner next to the old graveyard for over a decade.

Because it is an informal settlement, the municipality does not remove rubbish in this area. In addition, the roads are shocking and so narrow in places that the refuse removal trucks would get stuck.

The municipality only removes the rubbish next to the graveyard every few years. According to residents, usually before an election.

However, the problem has become so big that the rubbish covers the sidewalk and the road next to the graveyard. No cars or taxis can pass there anymore, and pedestrians must walk over the sewage to get to the next street.

“This is very bad. Even people who do not live here have started dumping their rubbish here. This dump will make people sick,” one of the concerned residents commented.

The Herald took the issue to the Merafong City Local Municipality but received no response as to when they would address the issue.

Residents such as this pensioner have no other choice but t walk over the heaps of rubbish if they want to get to the next street.
