People in Fochville must watch out for fraudsters

Fraudsters are increasingly active in the Fochville area.

The police in Fochville are warning residents in the area about an huge increase in fraud cases.

Many of these could have been prevented, they say.

The fraudsters often target businesses and pretend to be other businesses with whom the victims have done transactions with in the past. The criminals then, however, con the victims into believing that the business who they are transacting with, had changed their bank details. They then convince the victim to pay the money for the product or service they need over into the new account, but then disappear with the money.

“They pray on people’s laziness, because if the victims double-checked with the business they thought they were dealing with, they would have established that their bank details were still the same,” says WO Pieter Maartens.

In some cases, criminals get hold of a person’s banking account details by doing a SIM swop, but then only make small transactions for which they do not have to key in their pin. You can combat this by, if possible, setting your card so that every transaction needs a pin.
