Intersection a danger zone

This crossing in Fochville has no markings.

Motorists approaching an intersection near Laerskool Losberg in Fochville need nerves of steel.

None of the four corners of the Bosman and Du Preez Street crossing in Fochville have stop signs or road markings.

Anyone driving down any of the streets who does not know the area well would assume they have the right of way. The assumption could lead to severe accidents, as some motorists enjoy speeding up the wider Du Preez Street.

The only sign of a long-forgotten stop street is a faded stripe of about a metre at one corner of Bosman Street.

To make matters worse, tall bushes and weeds on the left-hand side of the intersection towards Du Preez Street from the Benadie Street direction obscure the view of motorists looking for vehicles approaching from their left.

A maintenance hole, covered with a concrete slab, stands proud of the road surface at one corner. Any vehicle that hits this would be severely damaged.

“The municipality is awaiting material to properly mark the crossing and other areas within the jurisdiction of Merafong. As soon as the material is available, all the areas will be marked. The bushes at the corner will be cut on Wednesday, 13 March 2024,” the municipal spokesperson, Mr Temba Fezani, replied.

This is the only sign that there might, once, have been a stop sign in Bosman Street.
