Municipality sees red, opens case

Red paint upsets and drives Merafong to action.

During the past week, poles, a wall on the bridge in Kokosi and the sign at the entrance to Carletonville next to 007 were painted red, allegedly by members of the EFF.

On Thursday afternoon, the sign at the entrance to Carletonville opposite the 007 shopping complex was painted red. However, someone had removed most of it by the next day. The wall and poles on the pedestrian bridge in Kokosi were still covered in crimson.

The Herald asked the municipality about the issue on Tuesday.
“The municipal public works department is currently dealing with the problem. Recently, the monument that someone painted red was repainted to remove the red colour. The same will happen to the Fochville bridge.

“The municipality strongly condemns the incident, and any conduct that seeks to destroy or damage any infrastructure belonging to the municipality and the people of Merafong,” says the municipality’s marketing and communication manager, Mr Temba Fezani.

“To show it is serious, the municipality has opened a case of malicious damage to property with the police. under case number 15/03/2024,” he added.
