Huge potholes a danger near schools

The bad service delivery is putting learners' lives at risk.

Fochville residents have to keep their eyes on the road to avoid the many dangerous potholes in the streets.

Parents of children in Hoërskool Fochville must be alert at the corner of First- and Steyn Streets just below the main gates, where an enormous pothole stretches over both lanes of Steyn Street on the school side. It is deep enough to damage almost any vehicle.

Unfortunately, it is not the only school in town where parents risk their lives picking up their children. Many more hazardous potholes pock Steyn Street near Laerskool Losberg, especially near the T-junction with Quinn Street. There is also an open maintenance hole at the corner of the two streets, and numerous other potholes around Laerskool Losberg, at 61 Losberg Avenue and the corner of Losberg Avenue and 8th Street.

“We have reported these potholes to the municipality many times, but they fail to repair them,” laments a concerned resident, Mr Corne van der Merwe.

Last month, the Herald reported that the municipality had several bags of tar in a storage area behind the Fochville Licence Department. It also received equipment from Harmony Gold towards the end of last year.
“The teams will be back to Fochville before the end of this week to continue with the patching of potholes,” the municipal spokesperson said on Tuesday.

There are many dangerous potholes in streets around Laerskool Losberg, such as these in Steyn Street.
