Watch out for ‘bank officials’

A new type of scamster is operating in the Carletonville area.

The Carletonville police warn of a new scam in the area.

People claiming to be officials from banks like Absa call clients and allegedly warn them that someone plans to steal money from their accounts.

The callers have all the client’s details, including their ID number.
They then ask the victim to respond to an option sent to their phone.

Once the client responds to it, the suspect steals the money from their account.

There have been several recent reports of such cases in the Carletonville area.

If bank clients get such a call, they should immediately cut off the caller and go to their bank’s local branch to report it to bank officials in person.
If a client does not press any buttons or do something that might enable the thieves to take money from their account, they have proof to show their bank that they did not do anything to enable the theft. This will make their case stronger for the bank to repay their money should any be stolen.
