Watch out at this crossing

An ongoing leak on a busy corner in Carletonville now also endangers road users.

Motorists driving from Talc Street into the busy Dolomite Drive struggle to see oncoming traffic because of the tall reeds.

By Monday, the reeds were already about two metres high. To the right of motorists turning into Dolomite, they obscure any oncoming vehicles.

The only way to work around the problem is for a motorist to drive slowly past the stop sign until they can see oncoming traffic. The situation is worse because many drivers speed up Dolomite.

Closer inspection shows that the reeds thrive on the saturated ground of a water or sewage leak.

Many sewage leaks have occurred in this area over the past year or so.

Earlier this year, residents complained that a large part of the open veld between Talc Street and next to Dolomite Drive and Zinnia Place was full of sewage.

Although the Merafong City Local Municipality sorted out the leak, they did not clean the sewage.

The Herald took the issues to the municipality on Tuesday.

“The municipality fixed the leak. We urge residents to use the municipal call centre to report all service delivery complaints and queries to avoid duplication.

“Residents can contact the call centre by calling (018) 788 9990 or WhatsApp 082 516 0794,” the acting municipal marketing and communications manager, Ms Nomonde Mahube, responded.
