Taxi owner murdered

Yet another member of the local taxi industry was murdered this week.

A taxi owner was killed in Khutsong on Wednesday, 4 October, in another murder related to the ongoing fights in the local minibus taxi industry. As far as could be determined, Mr Mzamile Jezile was driving his Toyota Quantum into Khutsong with a driver and another passenger at approximately 21:21.

They were driving down the Extension 5 bridge onto Solupane Road when they saw a white Merecedes-Benz approach from behind.

Suddenly, the occupants started shooting at them from the right. One of the passengers in the taxi also pulled out a firearm and returned fire. The driver kept his cool and raced straight down the road to the Khutsong police station.

Upon arrival, they realised Mr Jezile, sitting in the front passenger seat, had been shot in the head and was already dead. The driver had been shot in the back, while the other passenger had been shot in his leg and fingers. Both men were rushed to Carletonville Hospital.

Jezile was a member of the Carletonville United Taxi Association (Cuta).”We are devastated at his death,” the public relations officer of Cuta, Mr Lukas Kekana, told the Herald after the shooting.
