If you suddenly realise that the amount you spend on groceries has significantly increased over the past few months, you are not alone. These increases are not going to stop anytime soon. Below, I discuss some important tips you may want to consider to save money on your groceries.
Make a list of items to buy. Before going to the store, make a grocery list of things you will need for the month. A list will help you to be focused and disciplined so that you stay away from items you don’t need.
Compare store prices. If possible, compare a few stores around the shopping centre. You might be able to save money on certain items but try by all means to ensure your store comparison is not causing an additional travel expense.
Substitute goods. Compare different brand prices before making a final selection; you may find that a competing brand is cheaper than the default. Stick to your grocery budget. Stick to the allocated amount for groceries as far as possible and remain disciplined. It is natural for your attention to be swayed to products that were not part of the list.
Buy in bulk. Large-quantity purchasing can save you money. Where possible, go for family-size packages.
Shop without kids. When you are on a tight budget, leave the kids at home, if possible. There is a high probability that they will ask you to buy them a toy or snacks. If you didn’t budget for such, you run the risk of not buying all the grocery items you intended.
