‘Merafong is abusing us’

Kokosi residents were so furious about the electricity problems in the township that they were ready to start protesting this week.

Many residents say their electricity is often off for days, even when there is no municipal load shedding. Some say they have paid their accounts for decades but must also suffer without electricity. They also complain about the physical struggles that go with not having electricity.
“I am talking as a mother. They are taking us back to using firewood to keep our children warm. Yesterday my sister’s child got burnt with hot water on a fire,” a woman complained during an informal meeting of several community members. The residents complain that the municipality is “abusing” them. It provides no answers to why there are so many problems with their electricity.
An IDP meeting was scheduled where residents of Kokosi could get answers from the executive mayor, Ms Nozuko Best, and some of the management. However, it was postponed and then cancelled without communicating with the community. The residents said one of the main issues was the municipality giving the go-ahead for the new Kgotsoville housing development outside Fochville.
“They know the existing electrical infrastructure is not even adequate for the residents in the area,” they lamented. The residents were also unhappy because, according to a report, the payment level in Kokosi has risen to an extent that warrants less municipal load shedding. They say they are prepared to pay for electricity if it is supplied. Residents are also furious because the mayor did not even visit Kokosi after the recent death of three young children. The ward’s councillor, Mr Daniel Lucky Miyilibe, later joined the meeting and promised to support the residents in their fight with the municipality.
Although the residents had planned a shutdown on Sunday, 5 June, it has been postponed until after 24 June because learners are currently busy with examinations.
The Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality for comment on the matter.
“The electricity problem has worsened due to the overload on the rings supplying Kokosi. It is caused by the increased demand in winter and meter tampering in the area. The community should use their electricity sparingly and switch off any high-consumption equipment like heaters. The municipality is looking for a sustainable solution,” the municipal spokesperson said.
The Herald also asked Merafong whether the municipality or its insurance would assist residents when power surges damage their equipment. These surges often occur when the electricity supply returns after an outage.
“The municipality regrets to advise that it does not cover, nor is it liable for, a third party’s damaged appliances or the loss of food during power cuts. The municipality advises third parties to have insurance,” the spokesperson said.
