Sibanye-Stillwater strike finally ends

The almost three-month-long strike at Sibanye-Stillwater finally ended when members of two striking unions accepted a three-year wage proposal on Friday.

Members of AMCU and NUM accepted the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) proposal during a mass meeting at Masizakhele Stadium at Driefontein. The proposal is that Category 4 to 8 employees receive an increase of R1,000 in year 1 (amounting to 7.7 per cent); R900 in year 2 (6.5 per cent increase), and R750 in year 3 (5.2 per cent). Miners, artisans and officials will receive an increase of five per cent in year 1; 5.5 per cent in year 2; and five per cent in year 3. If their CPI is less than five per cent, their increase will be five per cent. Category 4 to 8 employees will also receive a once-off hardship allowance of R3,000, of which R1,200 would be a cash payment and R1,800 allocated to reducing debt or loans owing to the company. The final agreement is extended to all employees in the bargaining unit, including members of UASA and Solidarity, which did not strike.
“We welcome this positive step towards ending the industrial action at our gold operations and thank our employees for making their voices heard. We also acknowledge the integral mediation role played by the CCMA in facilitating constructive engagement between the parties. We now look forward to returning our SA gold operations to stability and profitability for the benefit of all stakeholders,” said Richard Stewart, chief regional officer for Southern Africa.
