House robbers cause havoc

House robberies in the area are getting out of hand, with three innocent residents being shot during two separate house robberies this week.

A Welverdiend couple was shot during an incident in the early hours of Tuesday, 31 May.
The couple from 12th Avenue was asleep when they were awoken by voices in the house.
Suddenly, two Zulu-speaking men appeared and demanded money. Their four accomplices waited outside.
When the husband refused to cooperate and tried to fight the robbers off, the thugs shot him in the stomach. His wife was also shot in her right arm.
The robbers grabbed three cell phones and the man’s wallet and fled from the scene.
The traumatised woman ran into the street and called for help from neighbours. They assisted her and her husband to get medical help and report the incident to the police.
Luckily, their children were not injured.
The thugs gained access to the house by forcing a window open.
The police are investigating a case of house robbery and two cases of attempted murder following the incident.
In yet another house robbery, an innocent bystander was shot this week.
The Carletonville police say the crime happened in Khutsong Exten-sion 6 next to Welverdiend at 18:39 on 3 June. The family from one of the low-cost houses had just closed their door when they saw an unknown, armed man outside.
“Open the door,” the thug demanded. The residents had no choice but to comply, and the man and two accomplices stormed in.
They grabbed the daughter’s cell phone and plasma television and were exiting when the neighbour across the street saw them and blew her whistle. This caused the thugs to flee. Unfortunately, another neighbour stopped at her house, not knowing that a serious crime had just taken place. The three house robbers ran toward her and fired a shot, hitting the neighbour in her left leg. The police are investigating house robbery and attempted murder cases. At the time of the newspaper going to print, no one had been arrested.
