Solar street lights going up everywhere

The Carletonville Community Policing Forum’s (CPF) “Let’s light up our streets” project to put up solar street lights in the area is gaining momentum.

The project started last month. According to one of the initiators, Mrs Letitia Jansen van Vuuren, many residents are now deciding to club in to make their areas safer.
In Welverdiend, a whole strip of solar lights has been put up in Station Street, while residents of 5th Street have also bought some of the lights.
In Carletonville, many residents around Reynecke Street and Carletonville Extension 9 have joined the project.
“The municipality has already put up at least 20 to 25 solar lights in Carletonville on behalf of the residents. Many others have paid private people to put up the lights,” says Van Vuuren.
The project has also kicked off in Fochville, where Francois van der Hoff is driving the initiative.
Van Vuuren urges the residents living on major routes to consider stronger 600 Watt solar lights to light up these areas properly. The regular solar lights are between 200 to 300 Watts.
Members of the public have two options if they wish to get involved.
As part of the first option, two or three families can pool their contributions and purchase a solar street light.
The CPF will then arrange for the Merafong City Local Municipality to do the installation.
According to the CPF, the municipality has promised to install the light within two weeks after it has been paid for.
As part of the second option, community members can buy a light, after which the CPF will refer them to a private person who will install the light at an additional cost. Individuals or businesses who want to make donations to have lights put up in certain areas can contact Mrs Letitia Jansen van Vuuren at 078 455 6466.
Those choosing the first option should also call her.
Residents wanting to buy solar street lights under the second option should contact Juan Pretorius at 076 152 4462.
Van der Hoff can be contacted at 083 778 7951.
