Another senseless taxi killing

Oberholzer shoppers got the fright of their lives when unknown gunmen shot a member of a local taxi association and his relative before their eyes last week.

The incident took place in the street opposite Three Monkeys Spar just before 16:00 on 30 March.

The police describe the incident as “most likely a hit”. A member of the Carletonville Local and Long Distance Taxi Association (CALLDTA), Mr Ganuze Dalindyebo (40) and his brother-in-law, Mr Mbusu Nothenjwa (42), were speaking to two men in a parked vehicle when three unknown men walked up to them. Two of them pulled out 9 mm pistols, while the third took out an AK47 assault rifle.

They started shooting at the two men. According to the police, nine shots were fired from the 9 mm pistols and six with the AK47. Both Dalindyebo and Nothenjwa however died at the hands of the cold-blooded killers. Some of the many shoppers in the area at the time later expressed their shock on social media.

“It happened so fast. We were so scared. All we could do was run away,” one of the regular parking guards at the supermarket told the Herald afterwards. The police cordoned off the street in front of the supermarket to gather evidence. The police’s special taxi violence unit is investigating the case.

CALLDTA members gathered at the scene to remember one of their own and his relative on Tuesday afternoon.

No one had been arrested by the time the newspaper had gone to print.
