Athlete shines at Nationals

A Carletonville athlete, Marceghlle Wakefield, excelled at the SA High Schools Athletics Championships last weekend.

This event took place at Germiston Stadium from 15 to 18 March. Marceghlle (15) is a Grade 9 learner from Carletonville High School, who is trained by coach Annetjie Smit. He qualified for the Nationals by winning two silver medals at the Gauteng Championships earlier this month. He qualified in both the 800 m and 1,500 m events. The young star showed his speed when he, once again, scooped the silver medals in both distances at the Nationals. He completed the 1,500 m with a time of 4:07 and also ran his personal best of 1:57 in the 800 m. Marceghlle was the only high school athlete from the Merafong City municipal area who qualified for the Nationals in this sport.
