Residents clean up themselves

People living in Carletonville Extension 9 decided to take matters into their own hands and clean up the park in the neighbourhood themselves.

For months, the residents have complained to the Merafong City Local Municipality that the park was in a terrible state. Although children used it as a playing area in the past, it has become so overgrown that it is no longer fit for purpose. The grass was so long that it offered cover for criminals. Some people also started dumping their rubbish there. After not getting any help from the municipality, a group of residents started cleaning up the park themselves from early last Saturday morning. They hired a tractor to cut the grass and got the owner of a small loader to help them remove heavier rubbish like branches. The rest of the cleaning was done by residents who had volunteered for this task.

The residents summoned the help of the owner of a small lifter for some of the heavier cleaning.
Children and pedestrians can now use the park safely again.
Various residents helped with the action.
