Carletonville sidewalk an obstacle course

People should be cautious when walking on the sidewalk on Station Street in Carletonville.

“I was walking on the sidewalk when I nearly fell into a hole,” a resident told the Herald this week. The Herald’s journalist went to check and found there were not only one but three open holes on the sidewalk in the area of house No.40.

The most dangerous one is an open manhole about six feet deep situated near the road. If a pedestrian or hitchhiker should step in it, they would be seriously injured. Many hitch- hikers catch lifts from Station Street to get to Khutsong, in particular.

The Herald took the issue to the Merafong City Local Municipality on Tuesday.

“People steal the manhole covers for scrap metal. The municipality pleads with the community to report such incidents to the municipal offices or the South African Police Services (SAPS). The municipality will replace them as soon as funding is available,” the municipal spokes- person answered
