Zama-zamas attack security officers

Illegal miners, better known as zama-zamas, are causing more trouble in various places in our area.

The Carletonville police say illegal miners attacked security officers on duty at the electrical substation in Blyvoor on Saturday, 30 October. The guards were in their watch house near Merafong Crushers when the incident occurred at about 23:00.
About 20 illegal miners stormed the watch house and overpowered the guards. The thugs tied them up and proceeded to vandalise the substation.
They stole parts worth about R500,000 before running from the scene.
Although the zama-zamas returned later that night, the security officers managed to chase them away.

In another incident, early on 24 October, security personnel at West Driefontein were patrolling the mine. They came upon a group of illegal miners near the No. 12 Shaft at around 01:30.
The zamas started shooting at the guards but, luckily, no one was wounded.
At around 23:00 on 11 October, a group of 50 to 60 zama-zamas stormed the Eskom power station near Deelkraal, presumably to steal cable. A shooting broke out between them and security guards. One of the guards was shot and killed but nothing was taken.
