Tugela Street is the latest dumping area

Litterbugs in Carletonville are continually looking for new places to dump their rubbish illegally.

While illegal dumping has been a huge problem in areas on the outskirts of town, like alongside Coronation Street and Carletonville Extension 9 for some time, the culprits are forever looking for new options.
This year, for instance, illegal dumping suddenly became a huge problem on the roads leading to the Carletonville graveyard.
Last week, people also started dumping their rubbish on the side of the open veld near Kaolin Street in Tugela Street. While there was only one bag next to the road on Monday, 25 October, more bags appeared the next day and even more the day after.
The ward councillor, Mr Carlos Rebelo, has been complaining for years that once a certain spot becomes known as a dumping place, more and more people will go there to dump their rubbish. Many also do it at night.

Rebelo has pleaded with the municipality to put up “no dumping” signs in problem areas, but the municipality has not responded. Neither has Merafong removed any of the rubbish that was dumped.
According to Rebelo, he has already lodged a complaint with the municipality about the latest dumping next to Tugela Street.
The Herald also took the matter to the municipality. When asked what would be done about the problem and when the rubbish would be removed, the municipal spokesperson said the removal of the illegal dumps was underway and all illegal dumping would be considered as soon as possible.
