Election without a hitch

Monday’s local government election proceeded without problems in the Merafong City Local Municipality.

All 76 of the voting stations opened and closed on time and no big problems were reported.
However, several voters did complain that their registration or re-registration had not been captured on the IEC’s system.
These people were either turned away or forced to go back to the voting station where they had voted previously.
According to reports on national media, this seems to have been a national problem.
It did not seem to have had an impact on the outcome of the election as it affected voters from all political parties.

The current Covid-19 pandemic did not lead to problems at voting stations. Personnel of the Gauteng Department of Health even used the opportunity to get some voters to vaccinate at some of the voting stations.
According to News 24, a total of 94,811 voters in our area were registered to take part in the election. Of them, only 36 per cent turned up to vote, however.
The Oberholzer Court was the busiest voting station in the area, as usual. Voters queued at this station for most of the day.
Those who went to vote around midday had to wait in line for about an hour and a half to cast their votes.
By printing time, it was clear that the ANC was again set to be the ruling party in Merafong as it had a strong lead in the election.
Although all the votes were not yet counted, the ANC had more votes than their two closest competitors, the DA and the EFF combined.
