Access road a 4 x 4 track

Residents of the bottom part of Welverdiend should be excused if their cars are not clean.

Twenty-seven years into the new political dispensation, not only do they still not have tarred roads but what they have, are in a terrible state.
The road at the entrance to 24th Avenue in Welverdiend is in such a state that residents have made a makeshift route on the side of it, just to get to town. What used to be the street has been worn so low that regular cars cannot get over the hump of a pipe near the entrance to the main route from Khutsong in 15th Avenue.
In some places, the gravel surface in 24th Avenue is also badly worn out. In 18th Street and 26th Avenue, regular sewage leaks have worn the deteriorating gravel road out even further in places.
All these streets will be a night- mare to drive on when it starts raining.
On Tuesday, the Herald asked the Merafong City Local Municipality when, if ever, these streets would be tarred or, at least, repaired adequately for ratepayers to safely drive on them again.
“The municipality is in the process of sourcing machinery to grade roads throughout Merafong and they will be attended to. The construction of new roads depends on the limited MIG grant allocation,” a municipal spokesperson replied.
