Merafong turning a blind eye to new dumping area

The entrance to Carletonville’s new industrial area and graveyard has become the new illegal rubbish dump.

Several unhappy residents have complained during the past weeks that people have started throwing rubbish on the sidewalks in Agate Street at the entrance to the new industrial area in Carletonville. The problem started suddenly as there was almost no dumping in this area about two months ago. Once the first people started dumping and the Merafong City Local Municipality failed to clean it up, more and more litterbugs have started throwing their rubbish in this area. The problem is now so bad that people are even throwing their rubbish along the road to the Carletonville graveyard. The long avenue of trees lining this road previously looked so pretty that many a model or matriculant has posed there. It has suddenly become so dirty that the area has become an eyesore. At the time of the Herald’s visit, the occupants of a silver Isuzu bakkie hung around for some time doing nothing, until they saw the journalist leave. They also ducked inside the vehicle as they saw the journalist taking photos. They then quickly got out of their vehicle, presumably to also dump their rubbish. The municipality did not answer questions on how the problem would be sorted out.
