‘He always put the patients first’

“He always put the patients first.”

This was one of many comments about the late Gerrit Bradnick (56), one of the area’s best-known paramedics, who suddenly passed away this week. Many residents were shocked when they heard about Bradnick’s passing on the morning of Thursday, 17 June. He was known to residents from all over the Merafong City municipal area as he worked for ambulance services in the area for decades. According to the district manager of Gauteng EMS, Mr Jurgens Bence, Bradnick had worked at the government ambulance service, with some interruption when he worked for private services from the early 1990s until 2016. He then resigned to become a co-founder of Gladiator Distress Alert. “He never took nonsense from anyone at the scenes and no matter what happened or who was there, always put the patients first. “He was one of the best paramedics this area has seen and was one of the best things to have happened to the service in our area and the residents here,” says Bence. He noted that, for some years, Bradnick was the only ad-vanced life support paramedic around Merafong. Mr Eugene (Pottie) Potgieter of Gladiator Distress Alert says he was devastated when he heard of Bradnick’s death. “We still learnt so much from him. He was always my go-to guy,” he says. This week, stories poured in on social media, from dozens of residents whom Bradnick had helped. A memorial service will be held for Bradnick at the Volle Evangelie Church on the corner of Talc and Antracite Roads in Carletonville at 14:00 on Friday, 25 June. The Herald conveys our condolences to all his loved ones and friends.
