Thousands of rands lost through huge water leak

A huge water leak in Khutsong is not only wasting money but also endangering residents’ property.

On Monday afternoon, water flooded the road just around the corner from the taxi rank at Khutsong’s Xhosa Section.
According to concerned residents, the water has been leaking for “seven or eight months”.
The high volumes of leaking water have already caused potholes in the road.
The Herald and two opposition party councillors tried to locate the source of the leak in the adjacent informal housing area. However, the leaking water stretched so far that it could not be traced.
“If this leak is not attended to soon, it will lead to sinkholes,” said one of the councillors, Mr Welile Fihla. He noted that the leak was close to where several houses had been destroyed by a sinkhole. The subsidence was caused by a water leak at house No. 590.
The Herald asked the municipality about the problem on Tuesday.
“The leak will be fixed as soon as possible,” a municipal spokesperson responded.
