Bail for alleged corrupt police members

Two members of the Khutsong police who were arrested on corruption charges last week have been released on bail.

According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (IPID) spokes-person, Ndileka Cola, Constable Segopolo (33) and Const. Maria Mamosa Rampou (35) appeared in the Oberholzer Magistrate’s Court on 21 May. They were granted bail of R3,000 each. Their case was transferred to the Oberholzer Regional Court and their next court appearance will be on 3 June. They have been charged with corruption. IPID arrested the two in Khutsong on 18 May, after they allegedly demanded a R2,500 bribe in August last year. They had found a woman in possession of homemade illegal pineapple beer when the stipulations of the Covid-19 lockdown declared it illegal. They allegedly failed to book in the confiscated beer and the buckets in which it was found at the police station. “The matter was reported and subsequently investigated by IPID. Upon finalising its investigation, the directorate sent the report to the Director of Public Prosecution for a prosecutorial decision. The Oberholzer magistrate authorised warrants of arrest for the pair,” says Cola.
