Woman arrested with R5 rifle rounds

In an unusual incident in the past week, a woman was arrested in possession of prohibited R5 automatic assault rifle ammunition.

According to the Khutsong police’s communication officer, Captain Eddie Boboko, members of Khutsong’s sector policing unit arrested the 34-year-old woman on the road between Khutsong and Welverdiend at approximately 10:30 on 23 April.
A community member contacted detective Sergeant Ditaba Mapitse with a tip-off and she, in turn, shared the information with Sgt Evelyn Matabane and constables John Maraisane and Onica Mpiayaphele.
The informant told the police the woman with the illegal ammunition was seen walking on a specific road. The trio responded immediately and spotted a woman fitting the description.
They cornered her on the road near Phase 2.
The police officers asked the woman if they could search her and, after she agreed, discovered 73 rounds of live R5 ammunition in her possession.
She was arrested on the spot and now faces a charge of the unlawful possession of ammunition.
The woman appeared in the Khutsong Magistrates’ Court on 26 April.
“Because firearms are often used to commit the most serious crimes in Khutsong, like murder, attempted murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances, the Khutsong police’s main focus is on removing illegal firearms and ammunition off the street. Together with this, the perpetrators must be brought to book,” says Boboko.
The Khutsong station commander, Colonel Melinda Prinsloo, welcomed the arrest.
“We want these kinds of dedicated police officers in the service, who will always render their service to the community and respond immediately when the community needs them,” she says.
“We will continue with our man-date to investigate, protect and make sure that the residents of Khutsong are and feel safe. We urge the community to continue sharing inform-ation with the police on the Crime Stop hotline – 08600 10111 – or the mySAPS app. They can also contact Khutsong SAPS at 018 783 9022/23/24.
Whistleblowers may report crime anonymously,” she added.
