Merafong’s Covid-19 deaths more than originally stated

During the past two days the number of people from the Merafong City municipal area who have died of Covid-19 has increased dramatically.

According to the statistics released by the Gauteng Department of Health Merafong’s Covid-19 death rate were usually not more than at most about five people since the start of the second wave of Covid-19.

That was until this week.

According to the department’s statistics there were 124 people from our area who had died from the disease on Wednesday. This death rate was still the same as the previously day.

On yesterday, Thursday 18 February our death rate had suddenly increased to 170 people. This was 46 deaths more than the previous day and majorly more than on any other day during the pandemic.

Although the Herald contacted the provincial health spokespeople, Ms Kwara Kekana, Mr Philani Mhlungu and Mr Vuyo Sabani, to find out more, as the increase was most probably an administrative correction, none provided any answers.

According to today’s statistics there were no more deaths reported in our area.

There are now 4 579 people from our area who had tested positive for the disease. A total of 4 298 of them have already recovered.
