Neighbour spooks house robbers in Carletonville

The police suspect that a house robbery in Carletonville last week could have ended much worse if a neighbour had not made a noise.

The police say the incident happened in Banfield Street on 8 January. The family’s domestic worker was cleaning the house with a vacuum cleaner when she heard a bang on the front door at 12:30.
She immediately thought it was her employer who had come home and called her name as she walked down the passage towards the door. However, when the domestic worker walked into the lounge, she was, surprised by three unknown men.
“Do not scream,” they told her and said they wanted her employer’s belongings.
The domestic worker turned around and ran towards the laundry. She managed to open the door and started screaming for help.
Unfortunately, she fell onto the floor and one of the suspects picked her up and dragged her back into the house. Although she tried to resist, he pulled out a firearm and pointed it at her. He pressed her against a wall and again instructed her to keep quiet.
A neighbour had heard her earlier calls, however, and peeped over the wall. Although she called the domestic worker to hear what was wrong, the latter was too afraid to reply.
The suspect who was with her, immediately let her go when they heard the neighbour. He and his accomplices then ran out of the house. Although the domestic worker later discovered that her cell phone was gone, nothing else was stolen from the house. Her employer and guards of the security company arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and called the police.
“We believe the incident would have turned out much worse if the neighbour had not called over the wall,” a police officer says.
