The police in Carletonville said they received a complaint that a motorist had assaulted people on the side of the road on 1 January. They spotted the white Colt bakkie at the corner of Coronation Street and the R559 near Slabbert Motors at around 14:00. The police asked the man and woman in the car to step out and started searching the vehicle.
Although the police had initially received information that there might be an R5 rifle in the bakkie, they discovered an AK47 and an empty magazine on the back seat instead. Three loaded AK47 magazines were also found under the driver’s seat. A .22 rifle and various live rounds were discovered in the driver’s door and elsewhere in the vehicle.
The police read the couple their rights and arrested them. They then searched their home in Fochville where seven hunting rifles were found, only four of which were licensed.
Besides the charges relating to the illegal firearms, the man was also charged with assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The police’s special trio task team is investigating the cases.
