A former Hoër Volkskool learner is making a difference against gender-based violence. She is helping to develop a cell phone application (app) for women in need to reach out for help when they are a victim of violence.

The app is called the Silent Trigger and a victim doesn’t need Wi-Fi or data to let someone know she’s in trouble. Monique van Tonder (neé McCallum) matriculated in 1992 and studied part-time in Potchefstroom while starting her career in the banking industry. She now lives in Cape Town. In August this year, she was announced as one of the top 25 finalists in Ms Unseen SA 2020.

Unseen International and Ms Unseen SA is the first pageant of its kind where the focus is not on a woman’s outer beauty, but on instilling hope in her fellow sisters. It involves creating an active women-empowerment initiative as a voice against gender-based violence.

As a finalist, Monique will be the face and voice of Unseen International and Ms Unseen SA for the next four months. She will be an online influencer, raising funds for Standunitedsa.org to release the app Silent Trigger. This app is not limited to Cape Town; it is for the whole country.

Companies who are interested in this great cause can contact Monique at 061 435 1910 or send her an email at monique.msusa@gmail.com. She invites everyone to like her Facebook page and follow her journey at Monique van Tonder, Ms Unseen South Africa Top 25 Finalist.
