According to the communication officer of the police in Carletonville, WO Peter Masooa, the incident happened on Sunday, 13 September. A security guard of Quattro was patrolling the area in his marked security vehicle. He was driving on the R500 towards the crossing next to the 007 shopping complex. As he drove past the turnoff to Blyvoor at around 19:45, he suddenly saw a group of about 25 zama-zamas. These illegal miners were dressed in traditional Sotho blankets and were walking towards the R500. When the zama-zamas saw the security guard watching them, they immediately started shooting at him. The guard quickly accelerated and managed to race away from the attackers. The police are investigating attempted murder and malicious damage to property charges following the incident.
