In the second such incident during the past month, explosives were stolen at East Driefontein during the week. The communication officer of the police in Carletonville, WO Peter Masooa, says an employee of 8 Shaft had ordered explosives at 07:00 on 7 August and locked them safely underground. He returned the next day to find that the place where the explosives were stored had been broken into. The thieves had stolen 30 starters, 414 fuses and 249 explosive gels. No one had been arrested in connection with the incident by the time of going to press. Explosives and fuses were also stolen from the mine’s Khomanani shaft on 11 July.
