DHL Stormers help set up a COVID-19 field hospital

The DHL Stormers were recently in Brackengate to help the Western Cape Government Health in setting up a COVID-19 Field Hospital.

Adhering to strict health protocols, the DHL Stormers players assisted in installing equipment such as beds and bedside tables.

The new facility was built in just over a month and forms part of the Hospital of Hope initiative, which seeks to cover the projected shortfall of beds required during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Western Cape.

The hospital is an intermediate care facility which will have 338 beds and over 300 staff to assist adult patients with COVID-19 who require in-patient care, especially oxygen therapy.

The care package comprises of acute care, rehabilitative and supportive care as well as palliative care, while the facility boasts Wifi for patients, paperless patient records and a medical waste disposal system which will pulverise and disinfect all waste generated in the facility.

Premier Alan Winde was on hand to thank the DHL Stormers for their small contribution in setting up what is a vital facility in the treatment of COVID-19.

DHL Stormers captain Siya Kolisi said that his squad really enjoyed the experience of helping to build a facility which will assist those hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is a world-class facility and it is really heartening to see everyone come together in this way to deliver quality care for those that need it in such a short space of time.

“As a squad we were honoured to play a small role in helping to deliver healthcare to those suffering from this virus,” he said.
