Roadblocks stop criminals in their tracks

A group of thieves’ luck ran out at a routine roadblock during the past week.

According to the communication officer of the police in Carletonville, WO Peter Masooa, the incident happened at around 06:30 on Sunday, 10 May.
One of his colleagues saw a green Nissan bakkie approaching and flagged it down for possibly violating the lockdown regulations.
As the vehicle came to a standstill, however, the driver and passengers jumped out and tried to run away. The police quickly apprehended them and started questioning them.
“The driver apologised and said they had stolen the roof tiles on the back of the bakkie because they were hungry,” says Masooa.
All the men were arrested for being in possession of the stolen goods.
In yet another successful roadblock on Sunday, police pulled off a Toyota Quantum taxi on the R559 near Carletonville Mall at around 09:45. Although the driver’s licence was valid, police noticed that the vehicle’s roadworthiness certificate was fake.
They also noticed that the vehicle’s licence disk had expired at the beginning of 2016. The police called the owner of the minibus to the scene and arrested him on the spot for fraud.
