Several boundary changes in Merafong before election

According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), many changes to Merafong’s boundaries are in the pipeline in the run-up to next year’s local government elections.

An advertisement calling residents to public participation meetings on proposed boundary changes was published in national newspapers last week. The meeting of the Merafong City Local Municipality will take place on Monday, 30 March 2020.
According to the IEC’s project coordinator in Merafong, Mr Quincy Sedisa, there are several changes to the provincial boundary suggested. In Ward 22 in the Fochville area, the border may change to incorporate farms that are now in Gauteng into North West. Klipdrift Dam area will likely move from North West to Gauteng. The same applies to Rysmierbult and the Klerkskraal Dam area, including the dam itself. These boundaries are being shifted according to where the residents do most of their shopping.
In Merafong, Carletonville residents living between Paul Kruger and Coronation streets could move from Ward 17 to Ward 28 as the area is much closer to Ward 28’s voting station at Hoërskool Wonderfontein.
In Khutsong, the Khutsong hostels, which are currently part of Ward 7, could move to Ward 10 because its voting stations at Kamohelo Primary School, the Anglican Church and Itumeleng Pre-school are much closer than the Ward 7 voting station.
Although Ward 22, which includes Kokosi Extension 6, and Ward 2, which has the new housing project next to Welverdiend, have grown significantly since the new developments, they will not be split up for the time being.
“We have already made sub- missions to the Demarcation Board and would like to hear comments from the public,” says Sedisa.
