Stay safe in the storm

Residents of Carletonville must make sure that they stay safe in the current stormy weather as there has already occurred some damage.

Various vehicles were damaged when they ended up in flood water at Shoprite about an hour ago. According to reports a tree also fell on a car.

It is not sure whether all the people have been brought back to safety yet.

In the area of Blyvoor Street more than 80 mm of rain has already fallen.

As far as could be determined, Welverdiend’s electricity is still off.

According to the Victoria State Emergency Services there are some things that you can do to keep yourself safe.

  • Stay indoors and away from windows.
  • If outdoors, shelter away from drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
  • Be prepared for power outages.
  • Floodwater is dangerous – never drive, walk or ride through floodwater.
  • Floodwater is toxic – never play or swim in floodwater.

 

Ensure you do the following after a severe storm:

  • Check your home and property for damage.
  • Keep clear of damaged buildings, power lines and trees.
  • Be aware of road hazards such as floodwater, debris and damaged roads or bridges.
  • Do not drive through affected areas unless it is necessary.
