Prepare for big water shutdown next week

The Merafong City Local Municipality warns that some areas will be without water due to a major shutdown by Rand Water next week.

According to Rand Water’s spokes-person, Mr Justice Mohale, the shutdown will affect all its reservoirs and towers in terms of water supply for 54 hours from June 24.
The shutdown would be done on the B11 pipeline so that a 2 500 mm butterfly valve from Lethabo to Vereeniging pumping station can be installed. This would result in the limited water supply to all Rand Water customers.
A senior official dealing with water issues in the municipality, Mr Gerhard Dirker, warns that residents must prepare for the shutdown.
“The Municipality has received the attached memo from Rand Water indicating a planned shutdown from Monday, June 24 to Wednesday, June 27, 2019, to all consumers within the jurisdiction area of the municipality, including the mines and other bulk consumers. During a telephone discussion with Mr Luvuyo Magavu of Rand Water, it was emphasized that, as a result of dolomite activities within our area, the Carletonville, Khutsong South and Khutsong North reservoirs were decommissioned. Furthermore, “no spare capacity exists to provide water to the communities during this shutdown and the residential areas are receiving water directly from the Rand Water feeding pipes,” he says.
Residents and bulk consumers are urged to use water sparingly and minimally during this period. All households must also ensure that they have sufficient water available during this period.
The municipality warns that high-lying areas can be entirely without water and says that containers (JoJo water tanks) in informal areas will have to be filled before the restriction date.
