Don’t go to the municipality if you need the toilet

Members of the public, especially commuters, must make sure they do not need the toilet when they visit the Merafong City Local Municipality’s main offices in Carletonville.

Hundreds of people visit the municipal buildings daily, to either pay for services or make enquiries. Despite that, the public toilets in front are either nor working or in an appalling state.
On Monday, the stench coming from the toilets was so bad that it hovered above the entrance to the municipal offices. Many people, several of whom are elderly residents from other towns, have to wait here.
The ladies’ toilets have been out of order for so long that the sign on the door is already peeling off.
The worst stink was coming from the toilets for the disabled, however. The floor was smeared with human waste and the toilet looked as if it had not been flushed for months. The men’s toilets were in a similar state, with the floor flooded.
In the past, visitors have complained that the toilets are inaccessible to them and are never cleaned, despite being right in front of municipal officials.
The Herald asked the municipality about the problem on Tuesday.
According to the municipal spokesperson, repairs and maintenance to all municipal facilities have been upgraded. The public toilet facilities at the municipal offices will also receive immediate attention, he assured.

The stench from the toilet for disabled people is so bad that it hangs in the air at the entrance of the building.
