Magistrate in court over alleged corruption

A magistrate from the Oberholzer Magistrates’ Court appeared in court himself after the Hawks arrested him for corruption last week.

According to the Gauteng Hawks’ spokesperson, Capt. Ndivhuwo Mulamu, they received information that the magistrate, Mr Ngubane Phinda Seopela, had allegedly demanded a bribe from two suspects who were arrested on charges of theft last week.
‘The magistrate is said to have approached the suspects’ colleague and demanded that the women pay an amount for them to be released at their next court appearance,’ says Mulamo.
After being informed of the magistrates’ intentions, the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Unit set up a sting operation on the evening of 29 November, during which they arrested him.
The national head of the Hawks, Lt-Genl Godfrey Lebeya has welcomed the arrest.
‘While everyone is considered innocent until proven otherwise, those who preside over cases in court are expected to conduct themselves in an exemplary manner. They should be beyond reproach.
‘If proven, the alleged conduct has the potential of tainting the proper administration of justice. We shall continue acting without fear or favour, regardless of the status of those who transgress the law,’ Lebeya said.
Seopela (49) appeared in the Carletonville Magistrates’ Court on Monday on charges of corruption and extortion. He was granted bail of R3 000, with conditions that he must not interfere with state witnesses and inform the investigating officer if he wishes to leave the province for any reason.
The case was postponed to 13 December for further investigation.
