Dunns clothing retailer in the Carletonville CBD was robbed in broad daylight at around 14:00 on Wednesday,
13 September. This was the second time that the outlet has been targeted. According to the sales assistant, Nelly Kasibi, two men came in at around 11:00 and said they needed airtime vouchers. They enquired about a Samsung Egde mobile phone and then left. At around 14:00, one of then rushed into the shop with another companion. One rushed towards the sales assistant who was flat-packing T-shirts and the other rushed towards the cashier at the point of sale. Three customers were in the store at the time. The suspects ordered the employees to go to the back of
the shop and made them lie down on the floor in the store room. They then demanded the safe keys from the cashier,
Tlale Maeko. According to her, they helped themselves to the phones in the one safe before going to the next one.
This one took a little longer to open because of the combination lock that secured it. The suspects then moved to the
tills and removed the cash before a third suspect came in with bags to load underwear and the phones. Thato Rakoma, the manager of Tekkie Town next door, he recognized the suspects as the same people who had been in
his shop earlier. Their grey BMW 3 series with three occupants and a driver was parked in front of Pep Stores. The
driver remained in the vehicle but, according to Rakoma, he acted suspiciously. He apparently got out of the vehicle
and opened all the doors, leaving them slightly ajar. He later saw the three men loading the big bags and two Dunn’s plastic bags into the car, which they had sice moved to the entrance of Dunns. The suspects managed to get away and the manager went into Dunns and opened the store room. The Dunns employees were visibly traumatized by the sequence of events. ‘It’s a painful experience. Sometimes, when you are alone, you get flashbacks of the incident. We are always expecting the worst,’ confessed Tlale. ‘You leave your family and you come to work happy. Then, something like this happens and you go back home shaking and crying,’ said the manager, who did not want to be named. ‘We don’t feel safe anymore. We are traumatized because this is the second robbery we have been through,’ said Nelly.
