The Carletonville SAPS is concerned about the high number of cars being stolen and broken into daily. The communications officer, WO Peter Masooa, the sector commander of Ext. 5 Khutsong South and the CPF chair-man, Mr Zibi distributed pamphlets at the intersections, taxi rank and shopping centres. The theft of motor vehicles and theft out of motor vehicles are the greatest concerns. The Merafong community is urged to observe the hotspots where most incidents have taken place. These include the parking area of the PicknPay Centre and the Carletonville CBD. The police also issued the following tips for motorists:
* Always lock your vehicle’s doors, even when you leave it unattended for a short while
* Always engage and activate your alarm system and mobilise it, especially at night
* Alert the nearest legal CPF car watch whenever you visit a shopping mall
* Always park your vehicle inside the yard when visiting friends or family and, if possible, park your vehicle in a garage or carport during the night when visiting
* Always lock entry gates to your premises
* Always be sure to remove the face of your radio when parking vehicle
* Do not advertise the sound system in your vehicle
* Do not leave valuable items like laptops, cellular phones etc. in vehicles
* Install anti-smash-and-grab signs on windows
* Install a gear lock * Use lock nuts to keep mag wheels safe
* Do not let your vehicle idle while you are opening the gate or garage door. If you are a victim of theft out of your motor vehicle please do not touch anything and do not remove anything from the scene, Report any crime to 10111/
