The prompt action of the police led to the arrest of an ATM fraudster operating at the Nedbank ATM in Palladium
Street in Carletonville on 11 June. According to the complainant, he was trying to withdraw money but, when the ATM notified him that he could not withdraw more than R350, he cancelled the transaction. When he turned around, a short man behind him told him the machine was not working and that he should rather use another ATM.
When he tried to do so, the suspect distracted him and managed to get a hold of the complainant’s card and
flee to a parked vehicle with three other occupants. After a few minutes, the complainant received SMS notification that an amount of R5 845.85 had been withdrawn from his account and, later, that the card had been used at the PicknPay Liquor Store in Carletonville. The police reacted immediately and arrested the suspects at the PicknPay
centre, still in possession of the complainant’s card and money. According to the Carletonville SAPS communications officer, WO Peter Masooa, crime involving bank cards is high in Carletonville. The Carletonville SAPS station commander, Brigadier Marinda Theron has applauded the arrest of the suspects and cautions members of the public
not to be fooled by unknown people claiming to want to help them at the autotellers. The four suspects appeared in the
